Tadelakt: Lime Finishes for Bathrooms and Curved Walls
Tadelakt is a hand-burnished lime finish with a soft sheen and gently varied colour. Its appeal is the way it wraps curved walls, niches and bathroom forms without a grid of grout lines. Choosing it means choosing a particular craft and maintenance routine, not simply a waterproof version of ordinary plaster.
Where this works
- Curved bathroom walls with a suitable wet-area specification
- Shower surrounds detailed as a complete system
- Niches and sculpted wall features
- Basin surrounds with appropriate protection
- Feature walls where a softly burnished finish is wanted
How we install it
- 1Agree the surface and exposure
Start with the location: a dry feature wall, a splashback and a shower are different specifications. A sample should show the finished colour, sheen and edge detail rather than only a pigment swatch. The person specifying the finish needs to know where water will run, where it may collect and how the room will be cleaned.
- 2Prepare a stable, compatible base
The supporting wall must be sound and suitable for the chosen lime system. Loose plaster, moving boards and unresolved damp cannot be corrected by a decorative coat. In a wet area, junctions, pipe penetrations and the shower connection need a complete waterproofing detail. Follow the selected system rather than borrowing a detail from an unrelated plaster.
- 3Apply, compress and burnish
The plaster is worked by hand as it sets, with compression producing the closed surface and characteristic soft movement. Timing, background suction and the geometry of the wall affect the result. Curves can suit the technique, but small niches and tight returns increase the work because each face and junction must be finished individually.
- 4Soap, cure and hand over the care routine
Suitable soap treatment contributes to the water-resistant surface. The finish still needs the curing period and maintenance specified for that product. Keep abrasive pads, strong descalers and unapproved cleaners away from it. Water resistance does not mean that neglected joints, trapped water or a leaking fitting can be ignored.
Tadelakt cost and bathroom price factors
Tadelakt cost in the UK depends on preparation, the chosen system, the amount of hand finishing and the shape of the room. A bathroom price cannot be calculated from floor area alone: shower walls, reveals, niches and curved forms all add working surfaces. Ask for preparation, wet-area detailing, finish application and aftercare to be described separately so that quotes can be compared on the same basis. A material-only price misses much of the work.
Tadelakt vs limewash and microcement
Limewash is a brushed mineral coating for a matt, breathable wall; tadelakt is a compressed plaster surface with a different build and care routine. Neither name alone specifies a shower system. Microcement offers another joint-free approach, normally using a sealed cementitious finish over a prepared and tanked wet-zone substrate. Compare the room, the maintenance expectations and the desired texture, rather than selecting a material solely because both can look seamless.
Choosing an applicator and planning repairs
When looking for tadelakt near you, ask to see a relevant sample, the proposed product specification and the care instructions. A repair should begin with the cause of the damage, especially if a crack or damp mark is involved. Hand-burnished surfaces rarely accept an invisible spot patch: colour, compression and age can leave a visible difference. Reworking to a corner or another natural break may produce a more coherent result. Talk through the room and its alternatives before committing.
Common pitfalls we prevent
Frequently asked
Can I do tadelakt myself?+
It is possible to practise on a small dry-area sample, but burnishing and soap treatment take skill. A shower is not a suitable first experiment because substrate, junction and waterproofing failures can be expensive to put right.
Can tadelakt be applied over tile?+
Not directly onto a glazed tile without a specified preparation system. Tile adhesion, grout lines, background stability and the wet-area build must be assessed; removal or a compatible base may be needed.
Can tadelakt be painted?+
Painting changes the appearance and surface behaviour. Soap-treated surfaces need compatibility checks and appropriate preparation. In wet zones, use only a coating approved for the complete system rather than ordinary wall paint.
Can tadelakt be repaired?+
Local repair can be possible once the cause is corrected, but colour and sheen may not blend invisibly. A larger panel repair to a natural break may be preferable.
