Clay plaster

Clay Plaster Walls and Finishes

Clay plaster is a trowelled wall finish made from natural clay, sand and fibres. It is applied in a thin coat like any plaster, then worked to a soft, matt texture with real depth. It is a different product from clay paint, which is a brushed or rolled coating; clay plaster builds a surface rather than colouring one.

Where this works

  • Living rooms and bedrooms
  • Feature walls and chimney breasts
  • Period homes with older walls
  • Calm, matt interiors in hospitality spaces
  • Hallways and stairwells

How we install it

  1. 1
    Survey the wall

Clay plaster scope is confirmed at survey. We check the wall for damp, movement and the existing finish, because clay needs a sound, suitable base.

  2. 2
    Prepare and prime

Loose material is removed and a suitable key or primer applied so the clay bonds evenly.

  3. 3
    Trowel the clay

Clay plastering is done by hand in thin coats, then worked to the texture you chose at sample stage.

  4. 4
    Dry and finish

The wall dries slowly and the colour settles as it does. It is left matt, or given a breathable treatment if needed.

Clay plaster or clay paint?

Both are natural, breathable clay finishes, but they do different jobs. Clay paint is brushed or rolled, gives a matt chalky colour and suits most plastered walls. A clay plaster finish is trowelled on as a thin plaster coat, with more texture, depth and hand-worked movement. If you want colour with minimal disruption, clay paint is quicker; if you want a crafted surface, clay plaster walls are the choice.

Clay plaster, limewash and polished plaster

Limewash is a thin mineral wash with cloudy movement that also breathes, and polished plaster gives a smoother, often glossier finish. Clay plaster sits between them: matt and textured, softer than polished plaster. See limewash wall coatings or polished plaster to compare.

Where we cover

We work across Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, Berkshire and London, including clay plaster in London homes, with a free survey before every quote.

Common pitfalls we prevent

Using clay plaster in a shower or splash zone, where it will not stand up to water
Sealing a clay wall with a non-breathable coating, which removes its main benefit
Applying over a damp wall without finding the cause first

Frequently asked

Is clay plaster the same as clay paint?+

No. Clay paint is a brushed or rolled coating; clay plaster is a trowelled plaster finish with more texture and depth.

Can clay plaster go in a bathroom?+

Away from water it can help with humidity, but not in shower zones or areas that are regularly wetted. Use microcement or tanked finishes there.

Does clay plaster suit older walls?+

It is breathable, which suits older walls that need to manage moisture, provided the wall is sound and any damp has been dealt with.

How do I clean it?+

Dust or lightly brush it. Avoid scrubbing and harsh cleaners, and check the care advice for any treatment applied.
