Roman Clay Wall Finishes
Roman clay is a decorative wall finish applied by trowel in thin layers and burnished to a soft, gently mottled surface. It sits between paint and polished plaster: more depth and movement than a flat emulsion, but quieter than a high-sheen Venetian finish. Roman clay paint is a popular name for the same look. We make samples, prepare the walls and apply it by hand so the movement suits the room.
Where this works
- Living rooms and bedrooms wanting a calm, tactile finish
- Feature walls, alcoves and chimney breasts
- Hallways and stairwells
- Hospitality and retail interiors
How we install it
- 1Start with a sample
Roman clay colours move as they dry, and the trowel work changes how light catches the surface. We make a sample in your chosen colour so you can see how much variation you like: subtle and close to plain, or more clouded and textured. Seeing it on your wall in natural light avoids surprises once the whole room is done.
- 2Prepare the walls
The finish is thin, so the wall underneath needs to be smooth and sound. Cracks are filled, old flaking paint removed and the surface sanded. A primer suited to the system gives an even base and helps the first layer apply consistently. Walls with damp or active movement are dealt with before any decorative work begins.
- 3Trowel and burnish
The clay finish is applied in thin, overlapping strokes, typically in more than one layer. Each layer is worked while it sets, and the final pass is burnished with the trowel to compress the surface and bring up a soft sheen. Because it is applied by hand, the movement is unique to each wall rather than a printed pattern.
- 4Protect where needed
In rooms with more handling, such as hallways, a protective coat can make the surface easier to wipe. We explain how to clean it and what to avoid. Like other hand-applied finishes, repairs are easiest at a corner or natural break, so plan sockets and fittings before the finish goes on.
Roman clay paint or polished plaster?
Roman clay gives a matt to low-sheen, chalky look with soft movement. Polished plaster finishes such as Venetian or Marmorino can be taken to a much higher sheen and a more marble-like depth. If you want something calm and understated, roman clay suits; for a reflective, burnished wall, see our polished plaster service.
Roman clay compared with clay plaster and limewash
Clay plaster is a thicker, earthy finish with a more natural texture, while limewash is a brushed mineral coating with a washed, cloudy look. Roman clay is smoother and more refined than either. Our clay plaster page explains that finish in detail if you want a more rustic feel.
What affects the cost of roman clay walls?
The wall area, preparation needed, number of layers, ceiling height, access and detailing around windows, reveals and corners all affect the price. A single feature wall is a smaller job than a full room or stairwell. A clear quote states the product, the number of coats and any protective finish.
Common pitfalls we prevent
Frequently asked
What is roman clay?+
Roman clay is a decorative wall finish applied with a trowel in thin layers and burnished to give a soft, mottled, matt to low-sheen surface.
Is roman clay paint the same as roman clay plaster?+
The names are used for the same look. It is applied by trowel rather than brushed like ordinary paint, which is what gives it depth and movement.
Can roman clay be used in a bathroom?+
It suits dry areas of a bathroom with a protective finish, but not inside a shower or other wet zone.
How long does it take to apply?+
It depends on the wall area, preparation and number of layers, including drying between coats. A feature wall is quicker than a whole room.
