Twelve and twenty millimetre worktops look light and modern and are the default in contemporary schemes. The price is support. A thin slab needs continuous support beneath it, not just at the cabinet ends, and any overhang beyond a couple of hundred millimetres will need steel. Twelve millimetre sintered stone is normally bonded to a full plywood substrate for exactly this reason. Get the support wrong and you find out with a cracked slab, which is not repairable.

A genuine forty or sixty millimetre stone slab is heavy, expensive and awkward to carry into a house. Almost every thick looking modern worktop is actually a twenty millimetre slab with a mitred edge strip folded down to create the appearance of depth. This is not a cheat, it is standard good practice: it looks identical, weighs far less and puts less load on the cabinets. What matters is the quality of the mitre, since a poor one shows a hairline along the top edge.

Worktop thickness affects worktop height, which affects appliance clearances, splashback heights and how a run meets a window sill. Change from thirty eight millimetre laminate to twenty millimetre stone and the whole worktop drops eighteen millimetres, which can leave an integrated dishwasher proud or a tiled splashback with a gap at the bottom. This is why worktop only replacements need a survey first, and why a two to three millimetre poured overlay is often the least disruptive route in an existing kitchen.

Handleless slab kitchens suit twenty millimetre or thinner, sometimes with a thicker island for contrast. Shaker and traditional kitchens suit thirty to forty millimetres, which sits better with the heavier door profile. Islands generally want more visual weight than the perimeter, so a common and effective pairing is a twenty millimetre perimeter with a mitred forty millimetre island. Mixing thickness deliberately looks designed. Mixing it by accident, because two suppliers quoted differently, does not.

For unsupported spans, yes. Thirty millimetre stone will cantilever roughly three hundred millimetres where twenty millimetre needs support sooner. For general use both are far stronger than the kitchen needs.
Will a thinner worktop change my kitchen height?+
Yes, and it matters in a retrofit. Going from thirty eight millimetre laminate to twenty millimetre stone lowers the surface by eighteen millimetres, which can affect integrated appliances and leave a gap under an existing splashback.
How thick is a microcement worktop?+
The finish itself is two to three millimetres over the substrate. Because the substrate is built to whatever profile you want, you can have any apparent thickness, from a very thin edge to a chunky forty millimetre look, without the weight of stone.
Does thickness affect price much?+
On stone, moving from twenty to thirty millimetres typically adds fifteen to twenty five per cent. A mitred edge is charged per linear metre and is usually the cheaper way to get visual thickness.
