Worktops and islands

Microcement Kitchens and Worktops

A worktop is the hardest test we set this material. It gets hot pans, red wine, lemon juice and a knife edge, so the substrate build and the sealer schedule matter more here than anywhere else in the house.

Where this works

  • Island tops and breakfast bars
  • Run of worktop with an integrated upstand
  • Cabinetry and end panels wrapped to match
  • Utility and boot room counters
  • Reception desks and bar tops in hospitality

How we install it

  1. 1
    Build a rigid deck

Any flex in the carcass shows in the top, so islands are twin layered and cross braced before we arrive with material. Sink cut outs get a hardwood collar.

  2. 2
    Mesh and fillet

Mesh over the whole deck, then internal fillets at the upstand junction so the worktop and splashback read as one folded surface.

  3. 3
    Fine coats and sanding

Two fine passes, sanded flat between them, because a worktop is viewed under a pendant light at close range and forgives nothing.

  4. 4
    Four coat seal

Four coats of food safe polyurethane rather than the three used on floors, with extra attention around the sink and hob where water and heat concentrate.

Common pitfalls we prevent

Under built carcasses that flex when someone leans on the overhang, cracking the top at the cut out corner
Undermount sinks fitted before the sealer has cured, so the silicone bonds to soft film and fails
Leaving lemon or wine sitting overnight, which will etch any polyurethane if left long enough

Frequently asked

Can you put a hot pan on a microcement worktop?+

Use a trivet. The finish itself is mineral and does not care, but the polyurethane sealer will mark if you park a pan straight off the hob on it. Every seamless top has this limit, including concrete.

Is it food safe?+

Yes, the sealer we use on kitchen surfaces is certified for incidental food contact. We still recommend a board for chopping, because a knife will cut through any sealer film.

Can you cover an existing laminate or granite worktop?+

Laminate can be keyed and built over if it is rigid and firmly fixed. Granite and quartz are possible but need aggressive mechanical abrasion first, and we will only take that on after a site test patch.

What happens around the sink?+

Undermount sinks are fitted with a hardwood collar and the microcement is turned into the cut out so there is no exposed board edge. Silicone goes on after the sealer has cured, never before.

Can you match the worktop to the floor?+

Yes, and it is worth doing on one sample board rather than two, because the same pigment reads slightly different at 90 degrees under kitchen lighting.
