Mezzanine Floor Coatings and Deck Finishes
A mezzanine deck behaves nothing like a ground slab. It flexes, it is often chipboard or cement particle board rather than concrete, and everything you carry up there arrives by stair or lift. The coating has to be chosen around all three.

How we install it
- 1Check the deck, not just the surface
We look at joist centres, board fixings and deflection under load. Loose boards get re-fixed and screw heads sunk before anything is applied, because a coating cannot bridge a moving joint.
- 2Choose for movement
Board decks flex, so a rigid epoxy cracks at every board joint. Flexible polyurethane or MMA is specified instead, with joints taped and detailed where the deck is known to move.
- 3Work with the access
Everything is carried up, so we plan material staging and extraction routes with your team and often run this at night when the lift and stairs are free.
- 4Stairs, edges and markings
Treads and landings get the higher slip grade, edge hazard marking is applied to the deck perimeter and loading gates, and walkway routes are set out with your safety officer.

Can you coat a chipboard mezzanine deck?+
Yes. P5 chipboard is coated with a flexible polyurethane or MMA system after fixings are checked and sunk. We avoid rigid epoxy on board decks because it cracks at the joints as the deck flexes.
Do you install the mezzanine structure itself?+
We coat and finish decks, stairs and landings. Structural steelwork and deck installation are carried out by your mezzanine contractor, and we are happy to work directly alongside them on programme.
How quickly can the deck go back into use?+
An MMA system is walkable in one to two hours, which is why it is the usual choice for a live stockroom. Polyurethane systems need 12 to 24 hours, so they suit a weekend possession.
What slip rating should stairs have?+
We specify R12 on treads and landings with contrast nosings, one grade above the flat deck, because stairs are where the risk assessment usually concentrates.
Can you work overnight in a live unit?+
Yes. Night and weekend working is standard on mezzanine work, since the deck is often unavailable during picking hours anyway.
