Microcement in Tunbridge Wells

Royal Tunbridge Wells sits on the Kent side of the East Sussex border, a short run up the A21 and A26 corridor from our Sussex base. Microcement enquiries here are mostly bathrooms, wet rooms and kitchen floors, in homes that range from Georgian terraces to post-war estates.

Where this works

  • Compact bathrooms and wet rooms in town-centre flats
  • Family bathrooms and en-suites in detached homes
  • Kitchen floors and splashbacks
  • Shop and restaurant interiors around the Pantiles and Mount Pleasant Road
  • Feature walls and stairs

How we install it

  1. 1
    Check the building first

Tunbridge Wells has a dense concentration of listed buildings, with several hundred within a couple of kilometres of the centre. If your home is listed, internal changes can need listed building consent from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, so check before work is booked.

  2. 2
    Prepare the substrate

Sound tiles, plaster, screed or board are checked, abraded and primed. Mesh goes into the base coat to resist hairline cracking as the building moves.

  3. 3
    Sample in your own light

Colour is mixed to sample and tried on your wall or floor. A large area reads darker than a chip, so you sign off the shade in the room it will live in.

  4. 4
    Finish and seal

Two fine colour coats are trowelled by hand, then sealed with 2K polyurethane. Shower floors get an R11 aggregate broadcast.

Flats, terraces and family homes around the town

Around the town centre, close to four in ten homes are flats or maisonettes, a much higher share than the borough as a whole. Those compact bathrooms are where a seamless microcement finish earns its place, because there are no grout lines to break up a small room. Further out, the borough has a large share of detached and semi-detached houses and most homes are owner-occupied, so family bathrooms and en-suites are just as common. For the bathroom build itself, see microcement bathrooms; for a shower or wet room on its own, see microcement showers.

Period homes from the Pantiles to Calverley

The town grew in stages: a building boom on the Pantiles and Mount Sion from the 1680s, early 19th-century estates on Mount Pleasant and Calverley, then large post-war estates at Sherwood and Ramslye. Conservation areas cover much of the centre, including The Pantiles, Calverley Park and The Common and Mount Ephraim. In older rooms, a breathable limewash can suit the walls better than a sealed finish, while microcement is usually kept for the bathroom and kitchen. See limewash wall coatings for that option.

Garage floors in Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge

We also lay domestic garage flooring in Tunbridge Wells and neighbouring Tonbridge, which is a separate town with its own council. A garage takes hot tyres and oil, so it gets a resin or epoxy system rather than microcement. See resin flooring in Kent for those floors.

Common pitfalls we prevent

Booking work in a listed building before checking whether consent is needed
Choosing a dark shade from a small chip for a large open floor
Skipping tanking in a shower because microcement is described as waterproof

Frequently asked

Do you install microcement in Royal Tunbridge Wells?+

Yes. We cover Tunbridge Wells, Southborough, Rusthall, Pembury and the TN1 to TN4 postcodes from our Sussex base.

Can microcement go into a listed building?+

It can be physically applied, but internal alterations to a listed building can need listed building consent. Check with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council before booking, and in older rooms consider whether a breathable finish suits the walls better.

Will microcement suit a small flat bathroom?+

Often very well. With no grout lines, a compact bathroom reads as one surface. The shower zone is still tanked before the microcement goes on.

Have you published a project in Tunbridge Wells?+

Not yet. Our project gallery shows finished work from elsewhere, and we bring physical samples to every survey.
